Sumo turnaround....


 First thing I did was draw up a turnaround of a sumo character then outline it in Procreate...




I then selected a small colour palette dropping in a base colour, one tint and one shade as well as sflat black for the belt and pants.


I then used a grey on another layer and changed the setting to 'multiply', added more highlights and a textured background.


I went on to share this design in a Facebook group for Concept Artists and Illustrators which led to a lot of very good if not slightly brutal feedback. The crux of this was:
  • ALWAYS use reference material when creating artwork
  • practice drawing shape and forms
  • really work on my knowledge of anatomy, proportion and balance
A number of people did comment that they could see this was meant to be a character with exaggerated proportions however it would be good to brush up on the fundamentals. This was similar advice to that which Kieran gave me for my video so will take it on board and practice, practice, practice the fundamentals as I go.

Black and white life studies...

As well as practicing my knowledge of value through using a value scale while life drawing, Kieran suggested I try making some life studies in just black and white again to work on my use/placement of lights and darks.  Once again I used the New Masters Academy YouTube channel for reference to produce the following digital charcoal drawings... Both of the above images were drawn in an hour, thirty minutes each. I spent forty-five minutes on each of the three below. I feel I'm starting to really benefit from these exercises and improving in small ways with each new drawing. Just for fun here are some 'arty' shots of the above images created in Procreate...

Adapting my new work flow on one last illustration...

Looking back through my work from the MSc, I would have liked to complete more coloured artwork as well as having touched on some simple animation however the time just didn't allow for it. I did find just enough time though to watch this tutorial on animation assist in Procreate... I then started work on the design at the top of the page, which is a still image taken from a sequence. I plan to finish a full colour version of this animated clip once the course is finished.

My final portfolio...

For the final version of my portfolio I had a very in-depth critique with Kieran, he suggested I change the format from portrait to landscape so it would be more appealing on laptops and desktop. The font was also changed and the title pages removed to make it more concise and streamlined.  We also talked about the presentation and layout of the pages and reduced the number of characters initially shown.
