Designing Briar's head


Eve sent me a link to a YouTube video about using a bow staff (because that is Briar's weapon of choice) which was really good, I also thought I'd use the face of the instructor as a starting point for my design of Briar's head. Below is a picture of the instructor and above my first sheet of head designs. Starting top left I worked my way right trying to iterate as much as I could while keeping the same style of hair...

I continued to play around with the design changing the shape and height of the forehead and hairline as well as the angle of the nose and mouth..



I then asked Eve for feedback and she chose the design to the far right on the top line of the first sheet but asked if I could make the forehead smaller...


Eve then chose the head four along from the left and I went on to design another hair do for one of the other outfits for the character.

Black and white life studies...

As well as practicing my knowledge of value through using a value scale while life drawing, Kieran suggested I try making some life studies in just black and white again to work on my use/placement of lights and darks.  Once again I used the New Masters Academy YouTube channel for reference to produce the following digital charcoal drawings... Both of the above images were drawn in an hour, thirty minutes each. I spent forty-five minutes on each of the three below. I feel I'm starting to really benefit from these exercises and improving in small ways with each new drawing. Just for fun here are some 'arty' shots of the above images created in Procreate...

Adapting my new work flow on one last illustration...

Looking back through my work from the MSc, I would have liked to complete more coloured artwork as well as having touched on some simple animation however the time just didn't allow for it. I did find just enough time though to watch this tutorial on animation assist in Procreate... I then started work on the design at the top of the page, which is a still image taken from a sequence. I plan to finish a full colour version of this animated clip once the course is finished.

My final portfolio...

For the final version of my portfolio I had a very in-depth critique with Kieran, he suggested I change the format from portrait to landscape so it would be more appealing on laptops and desktop. The font was also changed and the title pages removed to make it more concise and streamlined.  We also talked about the presentation and layout of the pages and reduced the number of characters initially shown.
