Initial sketches of Merlin for my primary project...
Moving on from designing and illustrating a sword I wanted to implement the same work flow and process into a character design. So far all my personal work has been quite instinctive and come about from just random thoughts of what I'd like to draw. This was no different. I thought it would be enjoyable to design a character based on the wizard Merlin, here are my initial sketches...
Quite rough and loose, here I was just trying to communicate his attitude and character through the least amount of lines as possible. Considering shape language I wanted him to be quite elongated and triangular as I see the character as quiet and regal but capable of being very dynamic and powerful. My vision of Merlin is a tall, older male with a wiry but slightly muscular frame, an introvert but with warrior capabilities.
I've tried to alternate his costume in each design, from head to toe also including the staff. Looking at these I think I'm going to develop the design on the left as the one in the middle is a little too like Gandalf from Lord of the Rings and the design on the right appears a bit too much like a King.
Saying that this is still very much in the early stages and will require much more thought with regards to his outfit. Below are some images from TV and film as well as the website Art Station I've collected for inspiration.
