Developing designs of the Eames chair...

After drawing some initial sketches for the Eames chair for Eve's main project, we spoke and she gave me feedback about which ones she liked, which I then took and tried to combine keeping the character of the chair that she had liked. Here are those two designs...

Eve liked the sturdyness of the base and the sharper edges of the design on the right and the character of the design on the left, in particular the curved wings/arms and that the shape was slightly wider and more rectangular. I proceeded to develop the following designs...

This was the first, before I got feedback I drew a second design altering the curvature of the arms and angle...

Eve liked the first design but asked if I could level off the seat slightly as it was at too steep an angle...

Above I widened the shape of the head board, thinned out the arms and made them less curvy and adjusted the angle of the seat but in doing so used a slightly harder edge and made the wood-grain more prominent which lead to the overall feel and character of the chair changing slightly. Eve stated she preferred the first design (the shape and the softness and also no wood-grain on the head board) so I went back to that and just adjusted the angle of the seat but trying to keep the shape and feel...

I wasn't happy with the position of the arm on the left so moved that in slightly and changed the shape then we decided to finish there. This is the final design which I then went on to colour in Procreate, I'll share the final piece in the next post.
