Design work for group project Keith Haring mural idea 01...

 I was tasked with the job of developing one of the later scenes in the animatic for the group promo piece. The scene in particular is inspired by a mural by artist Keith Haring painted in a New York club called The Palladium. Below is a photo of the mural...

My fellow student Eve had told me that to promote the club they had small versions of this mural printed and turned into jigsaw puzzles and handed out to guests as invitations. Here's an example below...

I thought it would be cool to incorporate the idea of jigsaw pieces into the scene but using part of the original mural so I chose a section of it and drew it up in Procreate according to HD dimensions...

I then created a new layer above and made the rough outline of a jigsaw puzzle...

I then saved this and took the design into Photoshop where I used the lasso tool too cut out the various shapes as shown below...

Although this was pretty crude I wasn't concerned too much at this stage with the finish as I just wanted to put together a rough example of how this would look. Also I decided I didn't want too many jigsaw pieces, best to keep it simple and straightforward. The plan was that the pieces would move into shot one at a time rotating in the process and slotting into place starting in the middle at the top. Here's an example of the sequence in the format of a story board...

Here the sequence starts in the top left down and then to the top right and down showing how the mural would appear as a whole. The mural would then fade to black. I also wondered how it would look just on a white background, here's an example...

The plan was to take the jigsaw pieces into After Effects and animate them there, however I had another idea to work on as well so seeing as I was preparing work to show at a group meeting the following morning I decided to hold off going any further with this for time being. I'll share the second idea in the next post.
